Kadath, or the Dream Quest of Randolph Carter, is based on H. P. Lovecraft’s 1943 novella, The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath. Cutting does not offer a straightforward retelling in his Kadath, but rather a more entertaining and colourful version.

 

Randolph Carter dreams of a mysterious sunset city on three different occasions. His obsession with this perfect city becomes dangerous as he ventures on a quest within the dream world to find the elusive place called Kadath. The further he goes, the closer he gets to a terrible secret. Carter faces Zoogs, the cats of Ulthar, and more in his journey. The main character is also, in short, a jerk and wholy unreliable as a narrator. Cutting also includes a Kadath gallery and humorous two-page comic titled “Did Lovecraft Die a Virgin?” at the end of this volume. 

 

The artwork in this graphic novel is notable in its detail and vibrant colours. There are times where Cutting’s artwork makes me think of Noel Fielding’s strange and psychedelic art pieces and character designs, which seems right at home in a dreamscape. This is an entertaining and well-illustrated graphic novel. I would encourage readers interested in retellings of Lovecraft to seek this out.  Highly recommended.

Storm-Star is a decent horror debut from rookie author I.N. Morgan.  It’s a werewolf story (well, sort of) with a touch of sci-fi added in.  The elements in the story are nothing new, but they are combined in the right proportions to make the story fun.  The book won’t blow casual readers away, but they will probably find it enjoyable enough to be worth the time.

Set in 1997, Ash Jagerhund is a down-on-his-luck 23 year old with no family, relatives, or future.  He receives a letter from a lost uncle, Jasper, who invites him to live with him, in an effort to rekindle old family ties.  Ash does so, and they reside in the Midwest town of Rust Springs, a town recently plagued by a series of gruesome pseudo-ritualistic murders.  The nature of the murders suggests they may not have a human source.   Ash makes two new friends, Attila and Daisy.  The three of them are unwillingly pulled into the search for the killer, who has ties to the Loupcroix family, a bunch of meth dealers on the outskirts of town.  The Loupcroixs believe that the world will end when a creature called the Storm-Star comes across the galaxy and trashes the Earth for the benefit of the Loupcroixs, who will of course then rule the world.  Add in Ash’s later revealed family history, and you have a fair amount of plot elements, which the author manages to fit into all the right places.

The writing is solid enough and keeps focused on the plot without detours, but there are times when a bit of detail would have helped connect the plot dots better.  Example: the cops somehow find a website all about the Loupcroixs and their beliefs, but there was no one to give them any hint of the site.  Besides, how many meth dealers maintain a website?  The characters are developed well enough, and are interesting, although the reader may get a few of the secondary characters mixed up on occasion, as the character cast is around 10-12 people.  The plot is nice and linear, and has enough action (and just a touch of gore) to keep the reader flipping pages.  It’s not a breakneck thriller, but it’s enough to make it worth reading.  One annoyance is that a good editor should have corrected is the grammatical and sentence structure errors that crop up from time to time.  It’s not enough to pass on the book, but it is aggravating.

Reading this, you can tell it’s written by a first-time author with talent, but who is still learning the craft.  As long as the reader is willing to tolerate the minor problems, Storm-Star is worth a look.  The author did leave a tractor-trailer sized opening at the end of the book for a sequel, and it would be great to see a sequel that focuses on the most exciting characters (Ash, Attila and Daisy) and whittles down the number of secondary ones.

Book Review: The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher

T. Kingfisher is the pen name for Ursula Vernon, author of a webcomic and also the middle-grade Danny Dragonbreath books. In The Hollow Places, the author shows she can successfully and satisfyingly navigate from one genre and audience to another.

Recently divorced, Kara has moved into her uncle Earl’s combination museum/curiosity shop/living space and is cataloging his jumbled collection of objects and taxidermy while she figures out what to do with her life. While she’s there, a box of oddities arrives at the museum with a carving labeled “corpse otter” inside. When Earl hurts his knees badly enough that he’ll need major surgery, Kara takes over running the museum in his absence, and a few days later finds a mysterious hole in the drywall in the otter room, which showcases a giant taxidermied Amazonian otter and also displays the corpse otter carving.

Kara asks Simon, the quirky (and very gay) barista at the coffee shop next door, if he can help her patch the drywall. When Kara and Simon look through the hole, they see that it opens into a hallway that shouldn’t exist and decide to explore the hallway to see where it goes… that is, once they’ve packed flashlights, string, a tape measure, and a thermos of coffee. Both of them have seen enough horror movies to know not to split up, but not, apparently to leave locked doors alone, because they open the door at the end of the hallway to somewhere very like the Wood Between the Worlds in the Narnia books, except that instead of a wood filled with pools, it is a water world of islands swamped by willow bushes, each with a door to another world.

I had not read it before I read The Hollow Places, but at the end of the story, T. Kingfisher credits Algernon Blackwood’s The Willows as an inspiration for this book. As much as I could see the influence of C.S. Lewis, it is very clear that The Hollow Places, in setting and atmosphere, owes a great deal to Blackwood’s story. Kingfisher has taken elements from both authors and created something wholly original. Kara and Simon are both well-developed characters. It’s enjoyable to see them interact: they are sometimes snarky, often supportive, and protective of each other. They are funny and resourceful,  and make a great team. The setting is almost a character itself: both the museum and the willow world with its many doors seem to have lives of their own. Without giving away the entire plot, I’ll just say you will never look at taxidermy the same way again.

The sense of creeping dread and the feeling that we are, as Kara puts it, just a pixel away from a hostile, alien dimension, is even more disturbing and compelling in Kingfisher’s book than it is in Blackwood’s story. While the plot doesn’t move along speedily, it has some great action sequences, especially near the end.  Certainly it is worthy of consideration for a Stoker. Highly recommended.
