Musings: Girls As Protagonists in their Own Stories in YA Fiction

I know we just visited the topic of “where did all the boys as protagonists go”  not that long ago but a piece I just read in The Mary Sue made me want to come back and look at it from another angle. The article, which is totally not about YA horror fiction, talks about three female protagonists of vampire media franchises from the 2000s, all of which are grounded in horror fiction tropes: Elena Gilbert of The Vampire Diaries  (based on the YA series by L.J. Smith), Sookie Stackhouse of True Blood (based in the Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris), and Bella Swan (from the YA series Twilight) 

So you don’t have to read the entire thing, the essence of the article was that the author saw in all three of these characters that they were defined by their romantic relationships– that their stories wouldn’t have existed without their love interests. All three of these characters are caught up in  (straight) romantic triangles (which I guess makes them more of romantic V’s)– and their role in triangles end up, for the most part, erasing the rest of their character, even though they are supposedly the protagonists,

The 2000s and early 2010s were a pretty good time for YA horror with boys as protagonists, though. Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan was very popular, and I know that here at Monster Librarian we read a lot of books where boys were, at the very least, point of view characters. Harry Potter drew a lot of those kids into a darker fantasy as well– the last book came out in 2007, just before my cousin turned eighteen. And in Harry Potter, there is a spark for change, because smart girls and passionate women save the day over and over, waiting for doofus teenage boys to get a clue about saving the world.  And girls who  grew up with Harry Potter noticed, and wanted the girls in their books to be the heroes (and villains) of their own stories.  And thus we get Jane McKeene from Dread Nation, who is strong, smart, and commonsensical; murderous Nita from Only Ashes Remain; the troubled girls of Sawkill Girls who alternate between being victims, villains, and survivors.

I don’t know why so many men turned away from writing books with boys as protagonists. But what we’re seeing now is, I think, the product of women seeing themselves erased from the types of stories they grew up loving, and wanting to see not just themselves but also a growing diversity in the kinds of protagonists we see in YA novels (or any novels, or any writing). They are hashtagging #WeNeedDiverseBooks and #OwnVoices because additional voices, their voices, need to be heard. Fear is just part of girls and women’s daily lives, and I don’t think enough people realize quite how scary it can be.

But there’s a lot of fear to face in today’s world that is not exclusive to women and girls  (hello, climate change, genocidal dictators, twisted social media policies, hate crimes, cyberbullying, school shootings). Who is writing the stories that resonate with boys today? Somebody needs to open their eyes past what they’ve seen of themselves so far. Yes, male characters have taken center stage for many years, but do we really want stories written in the past that make us cringe today to be the models we give those kids?

Let’s move forward with authors coming up with great stories that will showcase original characters and engage all kinds of readers. That’s our goal in libraries, right? It’s my goal, anyway. There are so many good books coming up, and I can’t wait to see what kids of vibrant writing lies ahead.

I’m not sure what genre exactly this book fits. As a Sherlock Holmes pastiche, it by rights should be in the mystery genre. It is solidly grounded in history, although the author notes that not all the dates fit. It might be considered political fiction. But while I wouldn’t call it horror, for me, it was disturbing and terrifying. The plot concerns what is probably the last case Meyer will write for Holmes (he’s written several, starting with the brilliant The Seven-Per-Cent Solution), and begins in 1905, with Sherlock’s older brother, Mycroft, who works for the Foreign Service, approaching him to ask him to determine the authenticity of a document that a woman died to get her hands on. The document? A French translation of what is known today as The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, an anti-semitic screed that claims that there is a secret cabal of Jews meeting regularly and trying to take over the world. The first version of this document was published in the years just before the story takes place, and in the novel, its origins and authenticity are unknown.

On a personal level, I cannot even begin to tell you how it made me feel to read of fictional characters I have known and loved since I was a teenager discuss whether this could be authentic. (spoilers start here) Of course, Sherlock quickly deduces that it is a fraud (because it makes no logical sense that a secret cabal would announce itself) but Mycroft informs him that in fact Jews have been meeting yearly in Basel, Switzerland (this is the Zionist Congress, spearheaded by Theodor Herzl, which is working towards establishing a Jewish homeland in Palestine). Could this be related?

Zionism and the historical foundation and location of Israel in Palestine are touchy subjects and Meyer handles them well, sending Holmes and Watson to interview a number of Jews in England who have differing viewpoints, who include Chaim Weizmann, the future first president of Israel, and writer Israel Zangwill, who favors assimilation. Continued discussions between Holmes and Watson, and Watson’s own musings, on the authenticity of the document and the likelihood that Jews might actually be involved in some kind of conspiracy, were enough to make my stomach ache even though they were in agreement before long that the document was a fraud intended to stir people to anti-semitic acts, and well before the friends traveled to Russia to root out the truth firsthand. On reading a passage by Mark Twain, which presumably is supposed to be complimentary, Watson realizes it could be read the opposite way as well, and notes:

Having seen portions of the Protocols, a dark corner of my mind found itself wondering if the Jews were as noble and noteworthy as Twain described them. I confess I have never given Jews much thought… But now, in the stillness of the night… I was mortified to find myself wondering if, despite all logic and probability, there might not be some grain of truth in the Protocols… The scurrilous pages had already begun their insidious work, tunnelling their way into my poor, addled brain.

Of course, history tells us that Holmes and Watson, despite their thrilling and mind-altering adventure here, failed to keep the lies from spreading. It’s quite clear from the author’s repeated statements about lies being accepted as facts and people believing what is most comfortable to believe, especially when they need a scapegoat, that his story has been significantly shaped by the current presidential administration. As a reviewer, I think this made a considerable difference on how Holmesian the story actually was. Holmes rarely made the kinds of deductions he typically does in his stories, or referred to his expertise: he was much more emotional and less creatively resourceful. Watson, of course, is Watson, the faithful chronicler, but he also interjects himself into the narrative more frequently.  The long separation between the two left the relationship somewhat rusty as well.  While still grounded in Holmes’ world, it almost feels like this is less a story of Holmes and Watson and more a warning for us, the readers now…. certainly, a timely one. Meyer is a brilliant writer for carrying the story off. Here, Sherlock discovers, the world is smaller than he thought, and the political is very personal.

I think Meyer’s choice to focus on The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was interesting and unusual, and he brought some mostly unknown history and historical figures to light for many readers (I really loved how grounded in history and how vivid and real the setting and historical characters were). But while I recognize the need for the discussions of the possibility that this was an authentic document, I worry that, as with Watson’s thoughts following his experience with the Protocols, readers will instead take the opposite message away from the book.

Fifteen-year-old Will’s brother Shawn has just been shot and killed by a member of a local gang. Will knows the rules: don’t cry, don’t snitch, and if someone you love gets killed, find the person who killed them and kill that person. Grieving and angry, he pries open a stuck drawer in his brother’s dresser and takes the loaded gun hidden inside so he can take his revenge. Will lives on the top floor of his apartment building, though, and he has to take the elevator down… and it’s a long way down, because on every floor, Will is forced to face the consequences of living with the rules, and of shooting to kill.

There is absolutely nothing about this book’s front, back, or inside cover that suggests that it is a ghost story.  It is dedicated to teens in detention centers. I didn’t have a clue what it was about when I initially picked it up, I just had read good things about Jason Reynolds and knew the book had won a number of awards, including the Newbery Honor (not sure how I feel about that– the audience for the Newbery is children up to age 14, and Will is 15– this is really YA). But in describing it to my mom, who has an interest in teens and gun violence, I had to explain to her that Will is confronted by ghosts while he is trapped in the elevator(ghosts are a turnoff for her).  Will’s “ghosts” aren’t very ghostly, though, which is one of the things that makes them so disorienting– Will is never quite sure whether they are alive or dead at first.

Long Way Down is a verse novel. There are frequent line breaks and plenty of white space on the page. The language is spare and powerful. Reynolds strips down feelings like grief, shame, anger, and sadness to the essentials by limiting how he puts words down on each page. Despite the pared-down text, Reynolds manages to draw the characters of Will’s ghosts with enough detail and emotional impact that readers will invest in discovering their relationships. Reynolds hasn’t written a horror story here, but it is a gripping and horrific story illustrating how this vicious cycle repeats, and the ambiguous ending is dread-inducing and heart-stopping. Highly recommended for middle, high school, and public libraries, and for readers 14-adult.
