Alexei Georg is in an uncomfortable situation: the brilliant and difficult sonata he has claimed as his original work was composed by someone else, name unknown. The sonata, titled October, has won him awards and may now qualify him for a grant to travel to the White Sea in Russia to record the songs of beluga whales so he can write a symphony based on their sounds , which he will be given time to write in the isolated wildlife refuge of Mount Greylock. Standing in the way of his goal are a lack of confidence that reveals itself in mediocre public performances of any other piece of music, and his vindictive wife, Carole Anne, who threatens to reveal the secret to the awards committee when he leaves her. An affair, a conspiracy with his mentor to prevent Carole Anne from revealing his secret, a jealous cousin, and a serial killer on the loose, all complicate events as Alexei attempts to escape to Russia to hear the belugas. All this would be more than enough to stand alone as a mystery, and Cappa writes that she was influenced heavily by Philip Marlowe, but the real story is the story of the music, and what Alexei is willing to sacrifice in order to rise to musical fame. The trope of a deal with dark forces for fame and glory, particularly in the musical world, is fairly common, but Cappa transforms it. Her vivid descriptions overtake the imagination, and at times, especially in her depictions of nature, have an actual physical impact on the reader. Cappa’s setting of a small boat in the White Sea was original and well executed, with plenty of shivers, bringing the supernatural to the forefront, and her prose in describing the beluga whales and the ocean voyage flowed beautifully.

Cappa’s descriptive powers aren’t limited to nature, either. It is really difficult to write a good sex scene without cliches or purple prose, but Cappa completely avoids these traps in writing about Alexei and his love interest, Lia.  Both of them have agency and show respect to each other, and Cappa writes their casual relationship respectfully as well. It’s great to see this kind of depiction of a modern affair written so skillfully. The story is frustrating on some levels, though. First, none of the characters are particularly likable or sympathetic. Mostly, they are self-centered and manipulative. While Alexei and his love interest, Lia, are well developed, Carole Anne is a caricature, and the police detective on the case of the serial killer is seen only perfunctorily, through the eyes of Alexei and his cousin, who view her with contempt. It’s also difficult to understand the motivations of many of the characters. For instance, Lia, who has known Alexei only casually in the past, chooses to stick with him after she’s threatened at work by Carole Anne, and decides to drive hours to visit him at the isolated Mount Greylock after multiple warnings that he is the primary suspect in the serial killer murders. Finally, I feel that the two storylines, of the more prosaic serial killer murders and the Gothic “deal with dark forces”, could both be stronger as stand alone stories. In particular, the supernatural story left a lot of questions hanging.

Despite any of the issues I had with Greylock, its descriptive powers, insight into both the power of music and the power of nature, and Cappa’s original treatment of what can be a fairly tired theme, aren’t noticeable once the reader is into the flow of the story, and it is well worth the time of any reader who wants to be swept away into an atmosphere where nature, humanity, and the supernatural combine to create both sublime terror and beauty. Recommended.

The transition from writing horror to thrillers sounds like it should be an easy move, yet very few authors have mastered the art of actually “thrilling” the reader from the first to the last without letting up.  Tim Lebbon has pretty much pulled it off in his first attempt. The Hunt is a definite departure form horror and fantasy. This is a different animal than the creature horror of last year’s The Silence, but in any genre, Lebbon proves he knows how to sustain pace and suspense.

The Hunt is run by the shadow group “Trail”. The members have many names, live invisibly from society, and are free from persecution as they provide the ultimate game for the super-rich, famous, and thrill-seeking.

The story begins when Chris Sheen returns home from a great run, breaking his own record, to find his wife and two daughters missing. A man warns him not to call the police; if he does, they’ll be butchered.

Meanwhile, Rose has been training to avenge the murders of her husband and children, as she is the lone survivor of the hunt.  Her mission options: escape the hunters and live while her family dies, or sacrifice herself to keep them alive.

Rose attempts to track down and eliminate the group, while Chris fights to avoid the hunters and stay alive long enough to save his family. Both work with separate motivations as they run, hike, and climb through Snowdonia.

To say The Hunt is fast-paced is like saying a Ferrari can break the speed limit. Lebbon’s writing has always been lean and tight; here, it moves and twists through a violent, exciting story with rarely a wasted word.

Avon has already signed him for a second thriller. Here’s to hoping there’s many more. Highly recommended.

Anyone feeling nostalgic for the glory days of high school will drop that nostalgia right in the trash bin within pages of beginning Some Girls Are. Our protagonist, Regina, is the best friend of the high school Mean Queen, Anna, and as the only sober person at a party she decides to do her duty as the designated driver and take Anna, who has passed out, home, over the vehement objections of Anna’s boyfriend, Donnie. who then attempts to rape Regina. Regina flees the party, ending up at her “friend” Kara’s. Kara convinces Regina to stay quiet, but uses the information to convince Anna that Regina slept with Donnie. Anna’s revenge is to knock Regina from the top of the high school pecking order to the very bottom. Anna orders her friends and hangers-on to persecute Regina, and Kara makes it her personal mission to destroy Regina in every way, even establishing an online social media page dedicated to hating her. While some of the attacks are over-the-top, and it’s rather alarming that not a single adult picks up on what’s going on, Summers still managed to make me a witness to the events and emotions that carry the story.

You would think the attacks on her would make Regina a sympathetic character, but she’s not. As Anna’s right hand she’s been there and done this to other kids at Anna’s bidding, including Liz, who attempted suicide, and Michael, now labeled “most likely to become a school shooter”. And it’s clear that Regina knew exactly what she was doing, if not its complete impact: she felt guilty, but she wasn’t a blind participant. She knows herself well enough that she doesn’t expect others to like or forgive her, and fights back viciously against her former friends whenever she has the opportunity. The way the teens in this book treat each other is often brutal and callous, and there is plenty of schadenfreude, selfishness, cowardice, and anger to go around. But there’s also a tiny ray of hope as Regina and Michael begin to build a tentative connection. The entire thing has the feel of The Chocolate War, if Jerry Renault had fought back, or found even a momentary kindness.

Regina has a strong voice and even though she is not a particularly sympathetic character, I grew to respect her and hope for her continued positive development. It’s not necessary to like her to be appalled by her treatment. I felt that Summers did a good job of presenting the multiple faces and feelings of important characters like Michael, Kara, and Liz, although I would have liked to know a little more about Regina’s previous relationship with Liz. While Anna and her other friends were pretty flat, the characters Summers did choose to develop were definitely three-dimensional.

Some Girls Are was recently challenged in South Carolina, and I can see why a parent would be uncomfortable with this book. Sexual assault, bullying, drug use, and suicide are difficult to read about or talk about, and no parent wants to believe this could be happening in their own child’s school. This is a gripping and horrifying read, especially because the monsters are human rather than supernatural, and it rings true. If this is the kind of thing kids today are facing in high school, a book like Some Girls Are, at least for mature readers, definitely has a place.  Recommended for ages 15 and up.
