Book Review: Hellbender by Josh Craven

Hellbender by Josh Craven

Raygun Books, 2019

ISBN-13: 9781951494018

Available:  Paperback

It is the summer of 1946. Veterans are returning from the War. Bobby Graywood loves baseball, his job as batboy for the local team the Green Sox, and Addie Vogel, even though she doesn’t know it. He’s an ordinary, awkward teenager, other than his Affliction. Whenever he makes skin-to-skin contact with anyone, he experiences their memories, past or future. As a result, he wears his gloves as often as he can to avoid touching anyone. One fateful day, the new pastor in town, Newton Hellbender, asks that he helps with the laying on of hands, complete with speaking in tongues. He requests that Bobby remove his gloves to better aid in the blessing. He does so reluctantly, and accidentally makes contact with an elderly woman whose memory reveals Hellbender’s true nature. Suffice it to say he is not the Servant of the Lord he purports to be. There is plenty of voodoo, small town politics, intrigue, and baseball games that drive this story to its end.

I do need to make potential readers aware of sensitive topics that require a content warning. This also requires a spoiler warning, as some of this will give key parts of the plot away. Randall Goode, Hellbender’s assistant, is a child molester. We see this through Bobby’s Affliction, which is disturbing on multiple levels. Bobby experiences all of the things in his visions as the person he touches. In one case, he is inside Randall’s mind as he is violating a young boy. I very nearly stopped reading at this point. I had to put it away for a few days before I could pick it up again. Later, Bobby almost falls victim to this abhorrent character. Racism is another sensitive topic regarding Jubal Moss, a Cajun veteran who makes the Green Sox roster. Jubal speaks with a Louisiana Creole dialect, and faces bigots on and off the baseball team. I became frustrated when he, the central Black character, is killed by Hellbender. Another victim of rape in the story is Bobby’s unrequited love, Addie. We do not see her rape occur, but it is implied.

All that being said, it is not a bad story. It is fast-paced, and there is so much going on that keeps the reader interested. However, be warned if you pick this up.

Contains: body horror, child molestation, racial slurs, racism, rape

Book Review: Ash Rising by Katya Lebeque

Ash Rising by Katya Lebeque
Wordsmith Press, 2018
ISBN-13: 978-1983106095
Available: Paperback, Kindle edition
**This review is cross-posted from Monster Librarian’s YA blog, Reading Bites**
Post-apocalyptic fairy tale. Do I have your attention yet? Ash Rising is set in the world of Cinderella, after her happily ever after. After a horrific genetic mutation that was supposed to help feed the world, and instead leeches the ground of its fertility and mutates the birds of the kingdom into giant predators who think humans are pretty tasty little snacks.
Ash lives in a once-grand manor, having renounced her title and opted instead for a life as a cook. Until the carriors came and she found herself the only one capable of keeping what remains of her household alive. While she has a complicated, resentful relationship with her stepmother, there are no evil stepsisters here. Ash dearly loves what family she has, and is determined to do the best for them.
Pluck Katniss Everdeen from Panem and plop her down in a fairy tale, and this is what you’d get. Dark, enduring, and brilliantly written, Ash Rising is a lovely and engaging read. Lebeque balances the gray grimness of disaster with the young spark of characters who can still, maybe, believe in the dream of a better life. Definitely highly recommended.

Contains: violence, some gore, language.

Graphic Novel Review: Upgrade Soul by Ezra Claytan Daniels

Upgrade Soul by Ezra Claytan Daniels

Available:  Paperback, Kindle, comiXology, iTunes app

Hank and Molly Nonnar decide to go through an experimental rejuvenation procedure to celebrate their 45th anniversary, a procedure which will allegedly revive their aging cells and restore vim and vigor. However, the results are not what they expect. Dr. Kenton Kallose, the lead scientist in this endeavor, isn’t completely honest with them about how things will, and do, pan out. As they discover the process is not so much rejuvenation as it is cloning, and they make more disastrous revelations along the way. Their clones, Henry and Manuela, who are both superior to their originals, are left physically deformed after the process. As both originals and clones navigate through their new lives, they realize that not all of them can survive.

Hank and Molly’s story is told in the present, as well as in flashbacks that give the reader the history of how they heard about the experimental procedure and the questions they faced as they made their mutual decision. The story is thought provoking and leaves readers with questions of their own about identity, facing the aging process, ethics, and more. I read it multiple times and each time discovered something I missed in previous reads.

It isn’t a story for the faint of heart.

There were a few things I did not know about the graphic novel prior to reading the physical copy I received at the 2019 American Library Association conference, signed by the creator (Ezra is super nice—if you have the chance to meet him, do it). I did not know this was developed and released by Erik Loyer as an app in 2012. I recently downloaded it and viewed the first chapter for free. It’s beautiful. The soundtrack provided by Alexis Gideon is incredible. It is available for purchase from Bandcamp as a digital download or on vinyl, including a signed copy by Ezra, here: https://fperecs.bandcamp.com/album/upgrade-soul. I found myself lingering in certain sections until the pieces played out. Navigating through the app is very smooth, and the 3D effects add so much to the story. I encourage readers to explore it. You can unlock the entire book for $7.99 here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/upgrade-soul/id549051057. See a preview of the app here: https://youtu.be/14CPAXh3NYA. Highly recommended
