Review: Masquerade by Melissa de la Cruz

After Jack’s sudden change of heart at the end of Blue Bloods, Schuyler Van Allen knows one thing is clear, the mysterious deaths of young blue bloods goes far deeper than she suspected. And it should be, because when dealing with creatures thousands of years old things should be a tangled mess of complicated.

Masquerade is where the series kicks into high gear. Here we learn that the older incarnated generation is most definitely keeping many, many secrets form the newly realized Blue Bloods and these secrets are very likely to get the kids killed. We also know that Schuyler is a completely new soul in these events and in part the act of keeping information from her is because there’s a terrible, snobbish divide between the “haves” and “you should not have had”s. The feeling that while these fallen angels are supposed to be earning their way back into heaven while their really just digging their pit deeper with pride, greed and lust hidden behind do-gooding is magnified.

In fact, there is still evil among the Blue Bloods, true evil that seeks to manipulate and corrupt the few actually trying to evolve. Mimi Force, brat extraordinaire and princess of Blue Blood culture takes a more center role as she struggles with her brother/bondmate’s undeniable love for Schuyler. In fact with corrupters at work around them Mimi finds herself unconsciously making the choice between good and evil and Schuyler finds herself the only one in a position to save her, despite being her target.

I love the complicated, and yet wholly un-religious take on the concepts of good and evil, maturing and trying to survive in a whole that seems to be purposefully keeping so many secrets from you. Even in the blue blood world teens find themselves suffering from the decisions of their parents and yet without full knowledge of events (which, of course, no one ever has) completely unprepared to fight. I absolutely devoured this book and see why so many have enjoyed it as well.
