TV Review: Ms. Marvel Episode 2: Crushed

Kamala Khan is a super hero! Well, she’s trying to be now that she has super powers. But first comes mastering her super powers. With her trusty companion Bruno she is determined to insert her head directly into the clouds, much to her mother’s dismay. But after a genuine act of heroism she discovers that not everyone likes heroism. A team of government agents are out to catch her.

I really enjoyed the scenes at the Eid celebration in this episode. Kamala and her friends’ breaking the community into cliques is funny, and seems pretty accurate. The strange flash backs/visions Kamala is getting from the bangle are intriguing, and I did not miss Bruno announcing that the power was actually coming from Kamal and not the bangle.

Also while her mother continues to rankle me, she did seem more supportive and loving this time around. Her refusing to tell Kamala the story of their family feels less like meanness and more like personal demons.

As much as I adore seeing super hero reality infect things like fandoms and science, it’s also really interesting to hear how it affects parts of the world other than Eurocentric ones. Marvel has displayed the horrors of the Holocaust through characters like Magneto. It is fantastic to see acknowledgement of other impactful events, like The Partition.

I can’t wait to learn more about Kamala’s family. This version of it at least.
