Villainous follows one of the newest junior members of the Coalition of Heroes, Tilly (Rep-Tilly), as she discovers not everything in the COH is what it’s cracked up to be. What’s a girl to do when her heroes turn out to be villains and the villains are the only ones who can save the world?
I really enjoyed the art and I adore Tilly herself in this collection. Now for the bad news. The world building and story telling is pretty flat. We know who the bad guys are and what they’re after. The plot is fairly predictable with very little character or world building. This is a good story for introducing tweens and teens to comics for sure because they art is very on point and the main character is fun and determined to do what’s right, even if that’s not what the heroes around her do. But most people who have been into comics for a bit will find every other character, villains and heroes alike, flat and robotic.
I do recommend it for intros to comics because it is fast, punchy and pretty. Tilly has a traditional “monster” look, but is never presented as anything other than normal in this world setting. I know there is a limit to the complexity of a story told in frames of art in 40 or so pages an issue. But I was equal parts into this story and disappointed after finishing it.
