Review: The Amulet by Alison Pensy

Available in Mass Market Paperback or e-book

Faedra Bennett was still a child when she lost her mother, and only her doting father and mysterious stray dog-turned Guardian got her through the grief. Now she is a young woman on the eve of adulthood, and she is going to need the support of both of them as she becomes the fated Custodian.

The Amulet is the first installment in Pensy’s Faedra Bennett Custodian novels and is a quick, fun read. Readers are shown a quaint English village with all of the hallmarks of a Fae-touched paradise. Of course, all is not well in the Faerie land attached, and Faedra quickly turns from well-behaved modern girl into the powerful Custodian of The Amulet, a key to commanding an ancient Faerie book that controls weather in many different realms.

Pensy’s architectural and landscape descriptions are broad and sweeping. While a fast pace is sure to keep the reader’s attention throughout, there are points when Faedra’s acceptance of her power and unknown past are a little too quick to be believable. The romantic side-story was a little too predictable, and seemed unnecessary.

For young adult or teen readers, The Amulet is likely to provide a good evening’s entertainment or two.
