Runaways vol. 1: Pride & Joy

7389Runaways takes the idea that parents are evil and makes it come true. This gang of six life long associates (not really friends since they only still hang out because of their parents’ yearly get together) accidentally discover their parents killing someone. Ooops.

In the course of one night, when trying to find out exactly what is going on they also discover their parents are a secret organization known as The Pride, they have super powers (or pet raptors they can psychically communicate with), oh yeah, and because they know their parents are now going to kill them.

It’s a little bit “What the Heck”. I mean, how can parents say they love you one minute, then threaten to make you pay, or kill a friend of yours, or outright attack you with their powers when you don’t realize you have any…There’s some potential for serious trauma here.

I connected almost immediately with the characters, and with the mystery. There just has to be something huge going on here to make parents turn on their kids like this, instead of sit down and explain things like reasonable murderous adults, right? And…what kind of parent frames their kids for murder?

Definitely one to pick up. The art is pretty awesome. The characters are fairly down to earth. The velociraptor is awesome. Pick it up!
