The story follows Elizabeth Townsend, a Coast Guard officer serving on the cutter\u00a0<i>Surveyor\u00a0<\/i>when the end of the world occurs.\u00a0 What appears to be a virus has attacked a boy in Albany.\u00a0 When a priest is called in by his mother, who fears it\u2019s actually a demon possession, the demons infecting the boy discover they can move from person to person through blood.\u00a0 They spread like wildfire and civilization is brought to the brink of extinction, with the infected running in packs like wild animals, killing everyone it their path.\u00a0 Elizabeth and her crewmates are brought to a secure facility so they can contact any surviving family members and make preparations to be taken to the West.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Five years after the infection, Elizabeth is living in a commune in the desert.\u00a0 Run by what\u2019s left of the U.S. Military, the commune is one of many scattered throughout the Western United States. The communes are segregated according to gender, with the main job of the women being reproduction.\u00a0 We discover that Elizabeth is a\u00a0<i>sensor\u2014<\/i>someone who can detect an infected person.\u00a0 Unfortunately for her, there are people in the remaining government who wish to exploit that ability.\u00a0 While at a major conference, Elizabeth discovers this plot to use her, and decides to go on the run.\u00a0 Unknown to most of the people living in the communes, there are scattered communities of uninfected people living beyond the reach of the military.\u00a0 What will Elizabeth find?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">This is a brilliant story\u2014demon possession that spreads like a virus.\u00a0 It\u2019s not overtly religious, but there are references to Christianity, with the communes being named after books of the Bible, and the Biblical quote \u201cI am Legion\u2026we are many\u201d.\u00a0 There are also people who can make holy water, which rids the demons from the body without killing the possessed.\u00a0 The characters are well-developed and the story itself is well-written.\u00a0 I also enjoyed the fact that our \u201chero\u201d is a strong female.\u00a0 There are a few mysteries left to be played out, which really holds my interest.\u00a0 There are two other novellas to come, and I am looking forward to reading them.\u00a0\u00a0<i>Demons Among Us<\/i>\u00a0is quite the page-turner.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Highly recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Contains: adult language, cannibalism and sexual themes<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Reviewed by Colleen Wanglund<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Demons Among Us\u00a0By W.E.
