Medina describes an unhappy nebbish who becomes possessed, and, eventually, controlled, by an urge to drink blood and act out his sexual fantasies.\u00a0 Dr. Gary Phillips is a hematopathologist, orphaned as a child and raised by an abusive grandfather.\u00a0 He is tortured by unfulfilled sexual fantasies and dotes on a sexy phlebotomist whom he follows on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Phillips&#8217; compulsion to drink blood (hematophagia or Renfield\u2019s syndrome) arises from his own psychosis, not from vampirism or a supernatural entity.\u00a0 When he \u201cblanks out\u201d, his \u201cGod\u201d takes more and more control of his thoughts and actions.\u00a0 His mania increases from sneaking sips of lab blood, to drinking menstrual blood, to siphoning blood from living humans.<\/p>\n<p><em>Siphon <\/em>is a horror story, but not a fantasy.\u00a0 Although the plot is shocking, it is not altogether unbelievable.\u00a0 I wish the author had delved more into the origin and power of Dr. Phillips\u2019 psychosis.\u00a0 His duties in the laboratory are those of a hospital lab technologist, rather than that of a hematopathologist.\u00a0 The book contains profanity and intense sexual scenes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Contains: profanity, graphic sex, gore<\/p>\n<p>Reviewed by Robert D.
