{"id":10445,"date":"2024-12-22T23:53:17","date_gmt":"2024-12-23T03:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.monsterlibrarian.com\/TheCirculationDesk\/?p=10445"},"modified":"2024-12-23T00:03:10","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T04:03:10","slug":"book-review-cure-by-kali-metis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monsterlibrarian.com\/TheCirculationDesk\/book-review-cure-by-kali-metis\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Review: Cure by Kali Metis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monsterlibrarian.com\/TheCirculationDesk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Cure_Metis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10446\" src=\"https:\/\/www.monsterlibrarian.com\/TheCirculationDesk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Cure_Metis-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monsterlibrarian.com\/TheCirculationDesk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Cure_Metis-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.monsterlibrarian.com\/TheCirculationDesk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Cure_Metis.jpg 283w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Cure<\/em> by Kali Metis<\/p>\n<p>Running Wild Press, 2022<\/p>\n<p>ISBN: 9781955062312<\/p>\n<p>Available: Paperback, Kindle edition<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buy:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/3144\/9781955062312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bookshop.org<\/a>\u00a0 | <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/406snlh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon.com<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Cure<\/em> is an entertaining, fresh take on werewolves in today\u2019s world.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t the standard &#8220;bite and claw&#8221; wolf-fest, but focuses more on their place in the present.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The plot is the best part, due to the nature and overall scope.\u00a0 Luna Auber is an expert confectioner at a specialty bakery.\u00a0 She has a normal life, except for the nerve problems and shaking she occasionally experiences.\u00a0 Her brother\u2019s suicide and last request lead her to Sweden, where she learns of her lycanthropic heritage, which explains her shakes&#8211; they&#8217;re the first step of her transformation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The tale expands into a country-wide story involving two different werewolf societies, and that\u2019s a big part of the book\u2019s appeal.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t just one wolf or pack running wild, decimating an area.\u00a0 Instead, the focus is the competing philosophies of the two groups, and how they believe werewolves should behave in the modern age.\u00a0 Luna is the lens the reader sees both groups through as she learns more about them, and she\u00a0 eventually has to choose a path.\u00a0 This is a bit like a political thriller: it\u2019s an unusual and intriguing way to write a werewolf story.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Luna\u2019s character, with her unpredictability and her own doubts, drives the story effectively, She isn\u2019t an anti-hero, but isn\u2019t a fighter for justice either&#8211; at least not all the time.\u00a0 She is emotional, impulsive, and makes some stupid decisions with her newfound abilities, like most people would probably do.\u00a0 She sometimes uses her powers for her own benefit, without respecting the gift (or curse) she has been given.\u00a0 This goes a long way towards making her a realistic character, and fits well with the overall narrative.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some minor quibbles: the chapters are VERY short, and there is a lot of back and forth between two timelines in the first half of the book.\u00a0 That might be good for the short attention span that so many younger people seem to have, but I found it frustrating.\u00a0 There are also times where the sentences seem fragmented.\u00a0 Tweaking that would have helped the flow of the reading.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Cure <\/em>is a good story that takes the old\u00a0 &#8216;howl at the moon\u2019 model of werewolves and does something different with it. It&#8217;s worth reading.
