15 Years of Monster Librarian

It is hard to believe we’ve been doing this for fifteen years now. My husband Dylan, the original Monster Librarian, posted the first reviews on January 1, 2006, just three months (and a couple of days) after our first child was born, because what better time to take on a gigantic project than when you have a newborn.

He founded Monster Librarian because at the time, he was working an internship at a branch of the Indianapolis Public Library as part of completing his master’s degree in library science, and he found that the librarians there didn’t know anything about the horror genre past Stephen King and had no interest in putting in the effort to learn more about it. At the time, much of the horror fiction available was also being published only by small presses not listed in the databases of major wholesalers like Baker & Taylor, Follett, and Ingram. It required a commitment for librarians to seek out publishers and order individual titles, and the books could be expensive ( I was working as an elementary school library media specialist at the time, and Baker & Taylor provided a 40% discount. That’s a big deal for a small budget). As a longtime horror reader who started building his collection as a teenager by haunting his local used book store, the indifference the librarians had to the horror genre was something her felt he needed to do something about.

At the same time, I was working with elementary kids who were asking me for scary books while sitting on an awards committee for my state library association’s children’s choice award. The way that was supposed to work was that we read all nominated books, then met to choose a representative sample of 20 books that would cover all genres. The genre I had to fight for was horror. It went beyond indifference– some committee members actively disliked it. I had done research into reading engagement while working on my MLS and one thing Dylan and I both agreed on was how important it was to hook kids and teens with what researcher Stephen Krashen calls “home run books”. So many kids and teens get hooked through scary stories and horror that he felt it was important to reach librarians and advocate for the horror genre for readers. This was his passion and he posted reviews even after he became ill and through five years of painful migraines and chronic, life-imparing pain, until just before he died in 2014. I think he’d be delighted to see all the positive changes that have occurred in the horror genre and in librarians’ attitudes and knowledge of the horror genre and scary stories for kids since the site was founded in 2006.

I love seeing the diversity growing in the genre. There is still plenty of room for growth, but wow, things have changed a lot, and mostly for the better. I think Dylan would love to see it.

I would like to make sure we are providing useful information to you. Monster Librarian is an all-volunteer effort and I need to make sure we are at least covering our hosting costs and postage. That costs about $200  every year and we almost didn’t make it this year. The Occultists is historical horror fiction involving the occult and spiritualist movements active in the early 20th century. When fifteen year old Max Grahame took a job as a postal boy in his small town in Georgia, he had no idea where it would lead. Carrying a box of dead letters to a storage space, he discovers an occult library. The postmaster and his wife are secretive and eccentric, but they are also kind to Max, and introduce him to their friend, Lillian Hearst, who hires him to work at a spirtualist gathering. When Max’s abusive stepfather learns about it, he forbids Max from attending another meeting of occultists, and when Max attends despite this, his stepfather disrupts the meeting and drags him home. That night, Max’s stepfather is brutally murdered in his living room, with Max an inadvertent witness. When Max learns he is the primary suspect, he escapes to beg the postmaster for help. The postmaster, along with Lillian Hearst and her sisters, offer to hide him by sending him to an academy run by their occult order in an isloated area of Nebraska. With few choices available to him, Max agrees to go to Steppeford.

This is where I expected the story to really take off, but it begins to ramble. Max spends long periods of time by himself, as the limited number of students and staff have been instructed to severely limit their interactions with each other. Schattel devotes pages to describing Max’s slow development of his psychic powers, broken up occasionally with surreptitious conversations with other students and occasional scenes of vivid action and suspense, confrontation, or horror interrupting the longer, drawn out sequences. There are chapters and scenes that seem to be moving the plot in a certain direction, but these aren’t necessarily followed through. Eventually, Max flees Steppeford with Harriet, a girl at the school who grew up inside the Order of Aurora, the occult faction that runs the school and has much larger ambitions. Once again, Schattel seemed to be directing the plot, but in a rambling way. Characters who seemed important to advancing the story and to Max’s character development evaporate.  I was reading an ebook and didn’t have a frame of reference for the length of the book, and this style of writing resulted in the book seeming much longer than 330 pages.

The book ends without tying up a significant loose end: a deal Max made with a spirit for an unspecified favor in the future has not yet been fulfilled. With Max only in his late thirties by the time the book ends, I suspect a sequel is in the making. A note: while our protagonist is a teenager for most of the book, and it could be read by teens, they really don’t seem to be the target audience.

Schattel’s experience as a filmmaker is evident through the way she creates setting and atmosphere. The Hearst mansion, the prairie fire, Manhattan at the turn of the century, all are cinematic in nature. She also has a way with words, and can capture an experience or character very effectively. Her descriptions of being trapped in a locked basement and of creatures like the Moorlander, a woman made up of a swarm of insects, for example, are vivid and take all the senses into account.  The characters she invests in are interesting even when they’re not sympathetic. She can ratchet up suspense and horror effectively, but her uneven pacing and rambling plot make parts of the book really drag. She clearly did research, but I’m wondering if using it too much ended up weighing the story down. In short, Schattel is a talented writer, but this is an uneven work from her. As it is her first novel, I am sure we’ll see more of the good stuff from her in the future.

Storm-Star is a decent horror debut from rookie author I.N. Morgan.  It’s a werewolf story (well, sort of) with a touch of sci-fi added in.  The elements in the story are nothing new, but they are combined in the right proportions to make the story fun.  The book won’t blow casual readers away, but they will probably find it enjoyable enough to be worth the time.

Set in 1997, Ash Jagerhund is a down-on-his-luck 23 year old with no family, relatives, or future.  He receives a letter from a lost uncle, Jasper, who invites him to live with him, in an effort to rekindle old family ties.  Ash does so, and they reside in the Midwest town of Rust Springs, a town recently plagued by a series of gruesome pseudo-ritualistic murders.  The nature of the murders suggests they may not have a human source.   Ash makes two new friends, Attila and Daisy.  The three of them are unwillingly pulled into the search for the killer, who has ties to the Loupcroix family, a bunch of meth dealers on the outskirts of town.  The Loupcroixs believe that the world will end when a creature called the Storm-Star comes across the galaxy and trashes the Earth for the benefit of the Loupcroixs, who will of course then rule the world.  Add in Ash’s later revealed family history, and you have a fair amount of plot elements, which the author manages to fit into all the right places.

The writing is solid enough and keeps focused on the plot without detours, but there are times when a bit of detail would have helped connect the plot dots better.  Example: the cops somehow find a website all about the Loupcroixs and their beliefs, but there was no one to give them any hint of the site.  Besides, how many meth dealers maintain a website?  The characters are developed well enough, and are interesting, although the reader may get a few of the secondary characters mixed up on occasion, as the character cast is around 10-12 people.  The plot is nice and linear, and has enough action (and just a touch of gore) to keep the reader flipping pages.  It’s not a breakneck thriller, but it’s enough to make it worth reading.  One annoyance is that a good editor should have corrected is the grammatical and sentence structure errors that crop up from time to time.  It’s not enough to pass on the book, but it is aggravating.

Reading this, you can tell it’s written by a first-time author with talent, but who is still learning the craft.  As long as the reader is willing to tolerate the minor problems, Storm-Star is worth a look.  The author did leave a tractor-trailer sized opening at the end of the book for a sequel, and it would be great to see a sequel that focuses on the most exciting characters (Ash, Attila and Daisy) and whittles down the number of secondary ones.
