Review: Soul Eater Part 2: Episode 1

Exam

“The Super Written Exam – Heart-Pounding, Reeling, and Restless. You’re Kidding!?”

The crew studies for a major upcoming test (Death the Kid and the Thompson sisters’ first ever), each one determined to be the top scorer, who legend says is destined to succeed in the mission to make a Death Scythe. One wonders if the whole competition is a trick. Of course our heroes are also have some pretty extreme flaws to work their way through. Death the Kid can’t even finish his name because of his OCD. Black Star gets caught trying to steal the answers. Soul gets caught with hidden cheat sheet. Tsubaki and Maka seem to be the only ones taking anything serious. Perhaps viewers can sympathize with the over reactions of the other students.

There’s a pretty sweet bit too, where Maka’s dad actually tries to support her on her own terms and show her that her needs are at least somewhat important to him. This is a sillier episode, but after the last one a little lightning of the series is in order.

(Also, it’s nice to see Blair in a role other than just a major annoyance, although she does manage to indulge that irritating cat side too.)
